The demand for affordable housing in urban areas has been a pressing issue globally, as rapid urbanization continues to outpace the supply of suitable housing options for low and middle-income populations. This research project aims to explore sustainable design strategies that can be implemented to address the challenges of urban affordable housing developments. The primary focus is on creating housing solutions that are environmentally friendly, socially inclusive, and economically viable. Chapter One provides an introduction to the research topic, giving an overview of the background, problem statement, objectives, limitations, scope, significance, and structure of the thesis. The chapter also includes the definition of key terms to ensure clarity and understanding of the research context. Chapter Two presents a comprehensive literature review that delves into various aspects of sustainable design strategies for urban affordable housing developments. The review encompasses ten key areas, including the current state of affordable housing, sustainable design principles, green building practices, community engagement, affordability challenges, policy frameworks, case studies, and best practices in sustainable housing development.
