Abstract
This thesis focuses on the critical task of designing a sustainable urban development plan for a growing city to address the challenges posed by rapid urbanization. The study aims to provide a comprehensive framework that integrates environmental, social, and economic considerations to ensure the long-term viability and resilience of the city. Through a systematic literature review, the research examines existing urban development practices, sustainability principles, and best practices to inform the design of the proposed sustainable urban development plan. The introduction sets the context for the study by highlighting the significance of sustainable urban planning in addressing the complex and interconnected challenges of urban growth. The background of the study provides a historical overview of urban development trends and their impact on cities, emphasizing the need for a more sustainable approach. The problem statement identifies key issues such as environmental degradation, social inequality, and economic instability that the sustainable urban development plan seeks to address. The objectives of the study are to develop a holistic and integrated sustainable urban development plan that promotes environmental conservation, social equity, and economic prosperity. The limitations of the study are acknowledged, including constraints related to data availability, time, and resources. The scope of the study outlines the geographical area and specific aspects of urban development that will be covered in the plan. The literature review examines ten key themes related to sustainable urban development, including urban design principles, green infrastructure, affordable housing, public transportation, renewable energy, waste management, community engagement, governance, policy frameworks, and monitoring and evaluation mechanisms. Drawing on a wide range of academic and professional sources, the review synthesizes current knowledge and identifies gaps that will be addressed in the proposed urban development plan. The research methodology section describes the approach and methods used to develop the sustainable urban development plan, including data collection, analysis, stakeholder consultations, and scenario planning. Eight components are detailed, covering aspects such as site analysis, stakeholder engagement, sustainability assessment, scenario development, and policy recommendations. The discussion of findings chapter presents the outcomes of the research, including the key elements of the sustainable urban development plan, such as land use zoning, green infrastructure networks, transportation systems, affordable housing strategies, and community empowerment initiatives. The chapter evaluates the feasibility and effectiveness of these interventions in achieving sustainability goals and addresses potential challenges and trade-offs. In conclusion, the thesis summarizes the main findings and contributions of the study, emphasizing the importance of a holistic and integrated approach to sustainable urban development. The significance of the proposed urban development plan in promoting environmental quality, social equity, and economic prosperity is highlighted.
