Abstract
This thesis explores the application of mobile technology to enhance agricultural extension services in rural communities. The rapid advancements in mobile technology have opened up new opportunities to bridge the gap between agricultural extension services and rural farmers, thereby improving agricultural productivity and livelihoods. The study focuses on understanding the current challenges faced by rural communities in accessing agricultural extension services and how mobile technology can be leveraged to address these challenges effectively. The research methodology employed in this study includes a comprehensive literature review, qualitative interviews with key stakeholders in agricultural extension services, and a survey of rural farmers to gather insights into their preferences and needs. The findings reveal that there is a significant gap in the delivery of agricultural extension services to rural communities, leading to limited access to timely information, training, and resources. Mobile technology presents a promising solution to overcome these challenges by providing real-time information, interactive training modules, and networking opportunities for farmers. The discussion of findings in this thesis highlights the key benefits of using mobile technology for agricultural extension services, such as increased access to information, improved communication between farmers and extension agents, and enhanced training and capacity building. Furthermore, the study explores the potential limitations and constraints of implementing mobile technology solutions in rural communities, including issues related to connectivity, literacy levels, and cost. In conclusion, this thesis underscores the significance of integrating mobile technology into agricultural extension services to improve outreach, engagement, and impact in rural communities. The findings suggest that adopting a user-centric approach, tailored to the specific needs and contexts of rural farmers, is essential for the successful implementation of mobile technology solutions. The study contributes to the existing body of knowledge on agricultural extension services and provides practical insights for policymakers, extension agents, and technology developers to enhance the effectiveness of agricultural extension services in rural communities through mobile technology.
