Abstract
This thesis investigates the effectiveness of participatory extension approaches in enhancing farmer knowledge and promoting the adoption of sustainable agricultural practices. The study recognizes the critical role of agricultural extension services in disseminating knowledge and technologies to farmers, ultimately contributing to sustainable agricultural development. The research focuses on assessing various participatory extension approaches and their impact on farmer knowledge acquisition and adoption behavior. Utilizing a mixed-methods research design, data were collected through surveys, interviews, and focus group discussions from farmers and extension agents in selected agricultural communities. The findings reveal that participatory extension approaches, such as farmer field schools, demonstration plots, and farmer-to-farmer extension models, have positively influenced farmer knowledge and adoption of sustainable practices. Factors influencing the effectiveness of these approaches include farmer participation, extension agent skills, resource availability, and institutional support. The study underscores the importance of tailored extension programs that address the specific needs and contexts of farmers, emphasizing the need for ongoing training and capacity building for extension agents. Overall, this research contributes to the existing literature on agricultural extension and provides practical insights for policymakers, extension practitioners, and stakeholders to enhance the delivery of extension services and promote sustainable agricultural practices among farmers.
