Abstract
This thesis explores the utilization of mobile technology as a means to enhance agricultural extension services in rural communities. The study addresses the challenges faced by farmers in accessing timely and relevant information, as well as the limitations of traditional extension methods. By leveraging mobile technology, this research aims to improve the dissemination of agricultural knowledge and resources to empower farmers and enhance their productivity. The study is guided by the following objectives to investigate the current state of agricultural extension services in rural communities, to identify the key issues and constraints faced by farmers in accessing agricultural information, to develop a mobile technology-based solution for improving agricultural extension services, and to evaluate the effectiveness of the proposed solution in enhancing farmers’ knowledge and practices. Chapter 1 provides an introduction to the research topic, including the background of the study, problem statement, objectives, limitations, scope, significance, and structure of the thesis. The chapter also includes definitions of key terms related to agricultural extension services and mobile technology. Chapter 2 presents a comprehensive literature review that examines existing studies and frameworks related to agricultural extension services, mobile technology applications in agriculture, and the impact of information and communication technologies on rural development. The literature review identifies gaps in the current research and provides a theoretical foundation for the study. Chapter 3 outlines the research methodology, including the research design, data collection methods, sampling strategy, data analysis techniques, and ethical considerations. The chapter also describes the development and testing of the mobile technology solution for agricultural extension services. Chapter 4 presents the findings of the study, highlighting the challenges faced by farmers, the features and functionalities of the mobile application, and the outcomes of the field testing. The chapter includes a detailed discussion of the results and implications for improving agricultural extension services in rural communities. Chapter 5 offers a conclusion and summary of the thesis, summarizing the key findings, discussing the contributions of the study to the field of agricultural extension, and suggesting recommendations for future research and practice. The study demonstrates the potential of mobile technology as a powerful tool for enhancing agricultural extension services and empowering farmers in rural communities.
