Abstract
This thesis investigates the utilization of mobile technology to enhance agricultural extension services in rural communities. The study is motivated by the need to bridge the gap between extension services and farmers in remote areas, where access to information and resources is limited. The research explores the potential of mobile technology as a tool to disseminate agricultural knowledge, provide real-time support, and improve communication channels between extension agents and farmers. The study employs a mixed-methods approach, combining quantitative surveys and qualitative interviews to gather data from both extension agents and farmers in rural communities. Chapter 1 provides an introduction to the research topic, background information on agricultural extension services, the problem statement highlighting the challenges faced in rural communities, the objectives of the study, limitations, scope, significance, structure of the thesis, and key definitions of terms. Chapter 2 presents a comprehensive literature review covering ten key themes related to mobile technology, agricultural extension services, rural development, and communication strategies. Chapter 3 outlines the research methodology, including research design, data collection methods, sampling techniques, data analysis procedures, ethical considerations, and the theoretical framework guiding the study. The chapter also discusses the selection criteria for the study participants, data validation methods, and measures taken to ensure the reliability and validity of the findings. Chapter 4 delves into the discussion of findings, presenting the results of the surveys and interviews conducted with extension agents and farmers. The chapter analyzes the data to identify the benefits and challenges of utilizing mobile technology in agricultural extension services, the preferences of users regarding communication channels and content delivery, and the impact of mobile technology on knowledge sharing and decision-making processes. Chapter 5 concludes the thesis by summarizing the key findings, discussing their implications for agricultural extension services in rural communities, and offering recommendations for future research and practical applications.
