Abstract
Mobile technology has revolutionized various sectors, including agriculture, by enhancing communication, access to information, and extension services in rural communities. This thesis aims to assess the impact of mobile technology on agricultural extension services in rural areas, focusing on its effectiveness, challenges, and opportunities for improvement. The study employs a mixed-methods approach, combining quantitative surveys and qualitative interviews to gather data from farmers, extension workers, and relevant stakeholders. The introduction provides a background to the study, highlighting the importance of agricultural extension services in promoting sustainable farming practices and improving rural livelihoods. It identifies the problem statement, which emphasizes the need to evaluate how mobile technology can enhance the delivery of extension services and address the specific challenges faced by rural communities. The objectives of the study are to assess the effectiveness of mobile technology in disseminating agricultural information, identify the challenges encountered in its implementation, and explore potential strategies for enhancing its impact. The literature review explores existing research on the use of mobile technology in agricultural extension services, highlighting its benefits in terms of increasing farmer knowledge, improving market access, and enhancing productivity. The review also discusses the challenges associated with mobile technology adoption, such as limited infrastructure, low digital literacy, and sustainability issues. The theoretical framework guides the study by drawing on relevant theories and models to analyze the impact of mobile technology on agricultural extension services. The research methodology section outlines the study design, sampling techniques, data collection methods, and analysis procedures. Surveys will be conducted with farmers and extension workers to collect quantitative data on their use of mobile technology and perceptions of its impact. In-depth interviews with key informants will provide qualitative insights into the challenges and opportunities related to mobile technology adoption in rural agricultural extension services. The discussion of findings chapter presents the results of the survey and interviews, highlighting key findings related to the effectiveness of mobile technology in delivering extension services, the challenges faced by users, and potential strategies for improvement.
