Abstract
Climate change poses a significant threat to agricultural productivity worldwide, particularly affecting smallholder farmers in developing countries like Nigeria. This study aims to analyze the impact of climate change on agricultural productivity among smallholder farmers in Nigeria, with a focus on understanding the challenges they face and potential adaptation strategies. Through a mixed-methods approach, including surveys, interviews, and data analysis, this research investigates the current state of agricultural productivity in the face of climate change and explores the perceptions and experiences of smallholder farmers in adapting to these challenges. The findings reveal that smallholder farmers in Nigeria are already experiencing adverse effects of climate change, including changes in rainfall patterns, increased temperatures, and extreme weather events, leading to reduced crop yields and income. Despite these challenges, the study identifies various adaptation strategies employed by farmers, such as changing crop varieties, adjusting planting dates, and adopting water-saving techniques. However, constraints such as limited access to resources, lack of information, and inadequate support from the government hinder effective adaptation. The study highlights the need for sustainable interventions and policies to enhance the resilience of smallholder farmers in Nigeria to climate change, including improved access to climate information, enhanced agricultural extension services, and investment in climate-smart agriculture practices. By addressing these challenges and promoting sustainable agricultural practices, smallholder farmers can better cope with the impacts of climate change, improve their livelihoods, and contribute to food security in Nigeria. This research contributes to the existing literature on climate change adaptation in agriculture and provides valuable insights for policymakers, researchers, and practitioners seeking to support smallholder farmers in the face of a changing climate.
