Abstract
This thesis investigates the efficiency of agricultural input subsidies in improving smallholder farmer productivity. In recent years, agricultural input subsidies have been a popular policy tool used by governments and organizations to support smallholder farmers in developing countries. However, there is ongoing debate regarding the effectiveness and efficiency of these subsidies in achieving their intended goals. This study aims to contribute to this debate by conducting a comprehensive analysis of the impact of agricultural input subsidies on smallholder farmer productivity. The research begins with an introduction that provides background information on the topic, outlines the problem statement, sets the objectives of the study, discusses the limitations and scope of the research, highlights the significance of the study, and presents the structure of the thesis. The literature review in Chapter Two critically examines existing studies on agricultural input subsidies, smallholder farmer productivity, and the relationship between the two. The review identifies key themes, trends, and gaps in the literature, laying the foundation for the empirical analysis that follows. Chapter Three details the research methodology employed in this study. It describes the research design, sample selection, data collection methods, and analytical techniques used to assess the efficiency of agricultural input subsidies. The chapter also discusses potential challenges and limitations faced during the research process, as well as strategies employed to mitigate them. In Chapter Four, the findings of the study are presented and discussed in detail.
