Abstract
Climate change poses significant challenges to agricultural productivity worldwide, affecting smallholder farmers who are particularly vulnerable due to their limited resources and adaptive capacities. This study investigates the impact of climate change on agricultural productivity among smallholder farmers in a specific region, aiming to provide insights into the challenges faced and potential strategies for adaptation. The research employs a mixed-methods approach, combining quantitative data analysis with qualitative interviews and surveys to understand the complex interactions between climate change and agricultural productivity. Through a case study of smallholder farmers in the selected region, the study explores the various ways in which changing climate patterns, extreme weather events, and shifting agricultural practices influence productivity levels and livelihoods. The findings reveal that smallholder farmers in the region are experiencing significant disruptions to their agricultural activities due to climate change, including erratic rainfall patterns, prolonged droughts, and increased pest and disease outbreaks. These challenges have led to reduced crop yields, food insecurity, and economic losses, exacerbating existing vulnerabilities in the agricultural sector. Moreover, the study identifies various adaptation strategies adopted by smallholder farmers to cope with the impacts of climate change, such as diversification of crops, water conservation techniques, and adoption of climate-resilient agricultural practices. However, limited access to resources, knowledge, and support services hinders the effectiveness of these strategies, highlighting the need for targeted interventions and policy initiatives to enhance adaptive capacity among smallholder farmers. Overall, the research underscores the importance of building resilience and promoting sustainable agricultural practices in the face of climate change to ensure food security, livelihood sustainability, and environmental conservation. The study contributes to the existing literature on climate change adaptation in agriculture and provides valuable insights for policymakers, researchers, and development practitioners working towards enhancing the resilience of smallholder farming communities in the context of a changing climate.
