Abstract
This research study examines the impact of body-worn cameras (BWCs) on police accountability and citizen trust in law enforcement from a criminological perspective. The use of BWCs by law enforcement agencies has become increasingly prevalent in recent years, with the aim of enhancing transparency, accountability, and trust between police officers and the communities they serve. The study explores the potential benefits and challenges associated with the implementation of BWCs and investigates how these devices influence police behavior, citizen perceptions, and the overall dynamics of police-citizen interactions. The research is guided by the following objectives (1) to analyze the background and historical context of body-worn cameras in law enforcement practices; (2) to identify the key issues and challenges related to police accountability and citizen trust in law enforcement; (3) to assess the impact of body-worn cameras on police behavior and decision-making processes; (4) to examine the perceptions of police officers and community members regarding the use of BWCs; and (5) to propose recommendations for improving the effectiveness of body-worn cameras in promoting police accountability and enhancing citizen trust. The methodology employed in this study involves a comprehensive review of existing literature on body-worn cameras, police accountability, and citizen trust in law enforcement. Qualitative and quantitative data will be collected through interviews, surveys, and observational studies to provide a comprehensive analysis of the research topic. The findings will be analyzed using thematic analysis and statistical methods to draw meaningful conclusions from the data. The study aims to contribute to the existing body of knowledge on police accountability and citizen trust by providing empirical evidence on the impact of body-worn cameras in law enforcement practices. The research findings are expected to inform policy decisions, enhance police-community relationships, and promote transparency and accountability within law enforcement agencies. In conclusion, this research seeks to shed light on the complexities and nuances of using body-worn cameras to improve police accountability and citizen trust in law enforcement.
