Project Abstract

Abstract
Human rights are fundamental rights that every individual is entitled to by virtue of being a human being. These rights are enshrined in various international treaties, conventions, and declarations to protect individuals from abuses and ensure their dignity and well-being. The Public Complaint Commission plays a crucial role in safeguarding these rights by providing a platform for individuals to lodge complaints against violations of their rights by government agencies or public officials. This research project explores the intersection of human rights and the Public Complaint Commission in promoting accountability, transparency, and justice in governance. The study examines the legal frameworks that govern human rights and the mandate of the Public Complaint Commission in addressing human rights violations. It investigates the effectiveness of the Commission in redressing grievances and holding public officials accountable for their actions. By analyzing case studies and empirical data, the research assesses the impact of the Commission on promoting human rights protection and enhancing public trust in government institutions. Furthermore, the research delves into the challenges faced by the Public Complaint Commission in carrying out its mandate effectively. These challenges include limited resources, bureaucratic hurdles, and lack of independence from government influence. The study proposes recommendations to strengthen the Commission's capacity to address human rights violations promptly and effectively. Overall, this research project contributes to the existing literature on human rights protection and the role of oversight institutions in promoting accountability and transparency in governance. By highlighting the importance of the Public Complaint Commission in upholding human rights standards, the study underscores the need for robust mechanisms to address violations and ensure justice for individuals. It also emphasizes the role of civil society organizations and the media in monitoring the Commission's activities and advocating for human rights protection. Through a comprehensive analysis of the roles of human rights and the Public Complaint Commission, this research project provides valuable insights into the challenges and opportunities in promoting human rights and accountability in governance. The findings offer practical recommendations for policymakers, civil society organizations, and other stakeholders to enhance the effectiveness of oversight mechanisms and strengthen human rights protection in society.

Project Overview

The study examined the role of Human Rights institutions in the country in addressing the problem of child abuse.

The objective of this study is causes, types and effects of child abuse on the child, the family and the nation. The work is meant to draw closer attention on this increasing scourge and access measures of addressing to preserve the fundamental human rights of the child as entrenched under the Nigeria Child Right Act.

In the study, the researcher defined what child abuse is; the various forms of child abuse, and also identified some of the causes and consequences of child abuse as a reflection of the societal problem and its impact on the life of the child. The study also evaluated the extent of damages it does to the abused child and the Nigerian society. In order to gather relevant data and information on the subject matter, the researcher used the questionnaire as data collection instrument, which was administered on 200 respondents within the FCT which is the limit of the scope of the study. A self constructed questionnaire titled Child Abuse Questionnaire (CAQ) was administered on the students after validation. The instrument has construct validity coefficient of 0.756 and reliability coefficient of 0.95. The statistical technique that was used to analyse the data collected was Chi-Square distribution test. The result of the analysis showed that there was a significant relationship between poverty and economic deprivation and child abuse in Nigeria. Also the study revealed that child abuse is still very prevalent in Nigeria and also that religious and cultural influences contribute to child abuse in Nigeria.
The result revealed that the Rights institutions are not doing enough to arrest the problem of child abuse and that the child right act is not working in Nigeria.
