Touting and pilfering in Nigerian airports have been persistent problems that have plagued the aviation industry in the country for many years. These issues not only tarnish the reputation of Nigerian airports but also pose security risks and inconvenience to passengers and airline personnel. Touting, which involves unauthorized persons soliciting or offering services to travelers, is a common occurrence at major airports in Nigeria. This practice leads to confusion among passengers and exposes them to potential scams and fraud. On the other hand, pilfering, the theft of passengers' belongings or cargo, is a serious security concern that undermines the trust and confidence of travelers in the aviation system. Incidents of pilfering have been reported in both domestic and international airports in Nigeria, highlighting the need for improved security measures and stricter enforcement of regulations. The lack of effective monitoring and surveillance systems in place at many Nigerian airports contributes to the prevalence of pilfering incidents. To address the problems of touting and pilfering in Nigerian airports, a multi-faceted approach is necessary. Firstly, there is a need for increased awareness and education campaigns targeting passengers to inform them about the risks associated with touting and how to identify authorized personnel at airports. This can help passengers make informed decisions and avoid falling victim to touts and scammers. Secondly, airport authorities and security agencies should collaborate to enhance security measures and surveillance systems at airports to deter and detect incidents of pilfering. This may involve the installation of more CCTV cameras, the deployment of additional security personnel, and the implementation of random checks on airport staff and contractors. Furthermore, stringent penalties should be imposed on individuals caught touting or involved in pilfering activities at airports to serve as a deterrent to others. This will help create a culture of accountability and discourage individuals from engaging in such illegal activities. In conclusion, touting and pilfering in Nigerian airports are pressing issues that require immediate attention and intervention.
