Project Abstract

The interpretative function of costume in theatrical productions is a crucial aspect of conveying meaning and enhancing the audience's understanding of the characters and themes being presented on stage. This research project focuses on the case study of a specific production, THA 303, to explore how costume design plays a significant role in interpreting the characters and narratives within the play. Costume design in theater is a complex art form that goes beyond mere clothing; it is a visual representation of the character's personality, social status, historical context, and emotional journey throughout the performance. By carefully selecting and designing costumes for each character, costume designers can communicate important information to the audience without the need for excessive dialogue or exposition. The case study of THA 303 production provides an opportunity to analyze how costume design choices were made to enhance the interpretative function of the play. Through a detailed examination of the costumes worn by the actors, this research project aims to uncover the creative decisions behind the costume design and how they contribute to the overall impact of the production. The research will involve analyzing the historical and social context of the play to understand how the costumes reflect the time period and setting in which the story takes place. By examining the materials, colors, styles, and accessories used in the costumes, the research aims to uncover the symbolism and meaning behind each garment and its relation to the character wearing it. Furthermore, the research will explore how costume design influences the audience's perception of the characters and their relationships. By studying the visual cues provided by the costumes, such as color coordination, texture, and silhouette, the project will investigate how costume design can subtly convey information about the characters' personalities, motivations, and internal conflicts. 1.1 Background to the Study

Costume aids art forms such as plays agent films, dance pieces, opera and so on. As an interpretative costume is one of the basic elements in performance sometimes to denote mood, status, modesty or simply to decorate a character

This study examines the interpretative functions of costume in mood, characterization and theme on the performance of Morountodun done by THA 303 class in the 2013-2014 academic session in the Department of Theatre Arts Delta State University Abraka.

1.2 Objective of the Study

This project would critically examine the interpretative function of costume in theatre productions using the performance of Morountodun in Delta State University Abraka as a case study.

1.3 Significance of the Study

This study is carried out in the hope that it would contribute positively to knowledge in the area of that research that deals on the interpretative function of costume in a play such as Morountodun by Femi Osofisan.

1.4 Methodology

The study adopts the literary and artistic methodologies. The literary methodology entails the critical analysis of Morountodun, by Femi Osofisan and other literatures. The Artistic methodology which is participant observation would be adopted also as the researcher was a member of the class of THA 303 in the 2013-214 academic session in the Department of Theatre Arts Delta State University Abraka that performed the play.

1.5 Scope of the Study

This project work focuses on the functions of costume and how costume if applied successfully could interpret the role of the character better. The scope of this research would also cover how costume used in the play Morountodun effectively portrays the role of some selected characters in the performances of Morountodun that was done by the 300 level students in the 2013-2014 academic session.
