Project Abstract

The abstract section of the research content is as follows This study aimed to investigate the effect of drug abuse among university undergraduates in Nigeria. A mixed-methods approach was employed, combining quantitative surveys and qualitative interviews to gather comprehensive data. The quantitative survey involved 500 undergraduate students from various universities in Nigeria, while the qualitative interviews were conducted with a subset of 30 students who reported drug abuse. The findings revealed a high prevalence of drug abuse among university undergraduates, with over 60% of the participants admitting to using drugs such as marijuana, codeine, and tramadol. The study also identified several factors contributing to drug abuse among students, including peer pressure, stress, academic workload, and easy access to drugs. The impact of drug abuse on the academic performance and overall well-being of the students was profound. Students who reported drug abuse had significantly lower GPAs compared to non-users, and they also experienced various physical and mental health issues. Furthermore, drug abuse was found to affect students' social relationships, leading to conflicts with family and friends. The qualitative interviews provided deeper insights into the students' motivations for drug abuse, revealing underlying issues such as depression, anxiety, and a desire to fit in with peers. The study highlighted the need for intervention programs to address drug abuse among university undergraduates in Nigeria. Recommendations included increasing awareness about the dangers of drug abuse, providing counseling services for students struggling with substance use, and implementing stricter regulations on the sale of drugs near university campuses. Additionally, the study suggested the importance of fostering a supportive environment within universities to help students cope with academic stress and peer pressure in healthier ways. In conclusion, this research shed light on the pervasive issue of drug abuse among university undergraduates in Nigeria and its detrimental effects on academic performance and well-being. By understanding the factors contributing to drug abuse and its impact on students, policymakers and university administrators can develop targeted interventions to address this growing problem and support students in making healthier choices.

Project Overview

INTRODUCTION
1.1       BACKGROUND TO THE STUDY

This research work is on the effects of Drug Abuse among University undergraduates in Nigeria. It appears that not only the use of drugs that create problems but rather their misuse. In other words the widespread use of drugs has not only turned our attention to the dynamics of drug use and its determinants but also made it necessary to weigh the impact of this process on social institutions and social charge in future generations.
Drug abuse according to Laver (1978) simply means the improper use of drugs to the degree that the consequences are defined as detrimental to the user and or the society. The World Health Organization (WHO
(2006) also defined drug abuse as a β€œstate” of periodic or chronic intoxication, detrimental to the individual and to the society, produced by the repeated consumption of a drug (natural or synthetic).
Drug abuse patterns include all aspect of drug usage by the youths ranging from how much, how often and what sort of drugs, where who, with, what circumstances and so on.
