Abstract
Drug abuse among Nigerian university undergraduates is a growing concern that has significant implications for the individuals involved, their families, academic institutions, and society at large. This research project aims to investigate the effects of drug abuse among Nigerian university undergraduates, focusing on the prevalence of drug use, the factors contributing to drug abuse, and the impact of drug abuse on academic performance and overall well-being. The study will employ a mixed-methods approach, utilizing both quantitative and qualitative data collection methods to gather comprehensive information on the subject. A survey questionnaire will be distributed to a sample of university students across different institutions in Nigeria to assess the prevalence of drug abuse, types of drugs commonly used, frequency of use, and reasons for drug abuse. In addition, focus group discussions and interviews will be conducted with university students who have experience with drug abuse, as well as key stakeholders such as university officials, counselors, and healthcare providers. The findings of this study are expected to shed light on the extent of drug abuse among Nigerian university undergraduates and the underlying factors driving this behavior. By understanding the motivations behind drug abuse, academic institutions and policymakers can develop targeted interventions and prevention programs to address the issue effectively. Moreover, the research will explore the impact of drug abuse on academic performance, mental health, social relationships, and future prospects of affected students. The implications of this research are far-reaching, as addressing drug abuse among university students is crucial for fostering a healthy and productive learning environment.
