Project Abstract

This project aims to investigate the efficacy of music therapy as a complementary treatment for individuals suffering from anxiety and depression. Anxiety and depression are prevalent mental health conditions that can significantly impact an individual's quality of life, social functioning, and overall well-being. While pharmaceutical interventions and traditional psychotherapy have been the mainstay of treatment, there is a growing recognition of the potential benefits of alternative therapies, such as music therapy, in managing these disorders. The project will be conducted in a healthcare setting, involving a diverse sample of patients diagnosed with either anxiety or depression, or a combination of both. The study will employ a randomized controlled trial design, where participants will be randomly assigned to either a music therapy intervention group or a control group receiving standard care. The music therapy intervention will be delivered by a certified music therapist and will involve a series of individual and group sessions, tailored to the specific needs and preferences of the participants. The primary objective of the study is to assess the impact of music therapy on the severity of anxiety and depression symptoms, as measured by standardized assessment tools such as the Generalized Anxiety Disorder-7 (GAD-7) and the Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9). Secondary outcomes will include the effects of music therapy on other aspects of mental health, such as sleep quality, emotional regulation, and social functioning. The project will also investigate the potential mechanisms by which music therapy may alleviate symptoms of anxiety and depression.
