Abstract
Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) is a complex disorder characterized by chronic inflammation of the gastrointestinal tract, affecting millions of individuals worldwide. The gut microbiome, which consists of trillions of microorganisms residing in the gastrointestinal tract, plays a crucial role in maintaining gut homeostasis and immune function. Dysbiosis, or microbial imbalance, has been implicated in the pathogenesis of IBD. This research project aims to explore the gut microbiome in patients with IBD to gain a better understanding of the microbial composition and its potential implications for disease progression and management. Chapter 1 provides an introduction to the study, outlining the background of IBD, the problem statement, research objectives, limitations, scope, significance, structure of the research, and definitions of key terms. Chapter 2 presents a comprehensive literature review encompassing ten key aspects related to the gut microbiome, IBD pathogenesis, dysbiosis, microbial diversity, and existing research findings. Chapter 3 details the research methodology, including study design, participant recruitment, sample collection, DNA extraction, sequencing techniques, data analysis methods, and ethical considerations. In Chapter 4, the discussion of findings delves into seven critical aspects identified from the analysis of gut microbiome data in IBD patients. This includes microbial diversity, composition shifts, identification of potential microbial biomarkers, impact of diet and lifestyle factors, microbial-host interactions, therapeutic implications, and future research directions. The findings shed light on the intricate relationship between the gut microbiome and IBD pathophysiology, highlighting the potential for targeted interventions to modulate the microbiome and improve patient outcomes. Finally, Chapter 5 presents the conclusion and summary of the research project, summarizing key findings, implications for clinical practice, and recommendations for future research. The exploration of the gut microbiome in patients with IBD offers valuable insights into the complex interplay between microbial communities and host immune responses in disease pathogenesis. This research contributes to the growing body of knowledge on the role of the gut microbiome in IBD and paves the way for personalized approaches to disease management based on microbial profiling.
