Project Abstract

Abstract
The rising threat of antimicrobial resistance has necessitated the exploration of alternative sources of antimicrobial agents. In this study, we aimed to investigate the antimicrobial properties of plant extracts against common pathogens. The research focused on identifying plants with potential antimicrobial activity and evaluating the effectiveness of their extracts against a panel of common pathogens, including bacteria and fungi. The study employed various extraction methods to isolate bioactive compounds from selected plant species and conducted antimicrobial assays to determine their efficacy. The research began with a comprehensive review of the literature on antimicrobial properties of plant extracts, highlighting the potential of natural products as alternatives to conventional antibiotics. Following the literature review, a diverse range of plant species was selected based on traditional knowledge and scientific evidence of their antimicrobial activity. Various extraction techniques, including solvent extraction, steam distillation, and maceration, were employed to isolate bioactive compounds from the selected plants. The antimicrobial activity of the plant extracts was evaluated against a panel of common pathogens, including Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli, Candida albicans, and Aspergillus niger, using well-established microbiological methods. The results of the antimicrobial assays were analyzed to determine the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) and minimum bactericidal/fungicidal concentration (MBC/MFC) of the plant extracts against the test pathogens. The findings of the study revealed significant antimicrobial activity in several plant extracts, with some demonstrating broad-spectrum activity against both bacterial and fungal pathogens. The bioactive compounds responsible for the antimicrobial activity were identified using chromatographic techniques, such as high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). Furthermore, the mechanisms of action of the bioactive compounds were elucidated through molecular studies, shedding light on their potential as novel antimicrobial agents. In conclusion, this research provides valuable insights into the antimicrobial properties of plant extracts against common pathogens. The findings contribute to the growing body of evidence supporting the use of natural products as effective antimicrobial agents. The identification of bioactive compounds and elucidation of their mechanisms of action offer promising avenues for the development of novel antimicrobial therapies. This study underscores the importance of exploring plant-based alternatives to combat antimicrobial resistance and highlights the potential of plant extracts as valuable resources in the fight against infectious diseases.
