Project Abstract

Abstract
The emergence of antimicrobial resistance poses a significant threat to global public health, highlighting the urgent need for alternative antimicrobial agents. In this research project, the antimicrobial properties of plant extracts against pathogenic bacteria were investigated. The study aimed to explore the potential of plant-derived compounds as effective antimicrobial agents to combat pathogenic bacteria. The research methodology involved the extraction of bioactive compounds from selected plant species known for their traditional medicinal uses. These plant extracts were then subjected to antimicrobial activity testing against a panel of pathogenic bacteria, including both Gram-positive and Gram-negative strains. The antimicrobial assays were conducted using standard methods such as disc diffusion and broth microdilution to determine the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) and minimum bactericidal concentration (MBC) of the plant extracts. The results of the study revealed that several plant extracts exhibited significant antimicrobial activity against the tested pathogenic bacteria. Notably, extracts from plants such as garlic, neem, turmeric, and aloe vera demonstrated potent antimicrobial effects, with broad-spectrum activity against both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria. Furthermore, the study identified specific bioactive compounds within the plant extracts responsible for their antimicrobial properties, including allicin from garlic and curcumin from turmeric. The findings of this research project contribute to the growing body of evidence supporting the use of plant-derived compounds as natural antimicrobial agents. Harnessing the antimicrobial potential of plant extracts offers a promising avenue for the development of novel antimicrobial therapies to combat drug-resistant pathogens. Additionally, the study underscores the importance of exploring traditional medicinal plants as potential sources of new antimicrobial agents to address the global challenge of antimicrobial resistance. In conclusion, the investigation of the antimicrobial properties of plant extracts against pathogenic bacteria provides valuable insights into the potential of natural compounds as alternative antimicrobial agents. This research contributes to the ongoing efforts to discover new antimicrobial therapies and highlights the importance of preserving traditional knowledge of medicinal plants in the search for effective solutions to combat antimicrobial resistance.
