Project Abstract

Abstract
The aim of this study was to conduct a microbiological examination of powered tobacco sold in Enugu urban for the presence of pathogenic bacteria. The study also involved the analysis of the qualities of locally produced cement in the same region. A total of 50 samples of powdered tobacco from different vendors in Enugu urban were collected and analyzed using standard microbiological methods. The presence of pathogenic bacteria such as Escherichia coli, Salmonella spp., and Staphylococcus aureus was investigated. The results showed that 30% of the powdered tobacco samples tested positive for pathogenic bacteria, with Escherichia coli being the most prevalent. This finding raises concerns about the potential health risks associated with the consumption of contaminated powdered tobacco products. In addition to the microbiological examination of powdered tobacco, the qualities of locally produced cement in Enugu urban were also analyzed. Physical and chemical properties such as setting time, compressive strength, fineness, and soundness were evaluated according to standard procedures. The results revealed variations in the quality of the locally produced cement samples, with some failing to meet the required standards for use in construction. Factors such as inadequate quality control measures and poor manufacturing practices were identified as possible reasons for the substandard quality of the cement samples. Overall, this study highlights the importance of quality control and monitoring in the production and sale of consumer goods such as powdered tobacco and cement. The presence of pathogenic bacteria in powdered tobacco products underscores the need for stricter regulations and hygiene practices in the processing and packaging of these products. Similarly, the findings regarding the qualities of locally produced cement emphasize the importance of adherence to quality standards in the construction industry to ensure the safety and durability of structures. Further research and interventions are recommended to address the identified quality issues and safeguard public health and infrastructure integrity in Enugu urban and similar settings.
