Project Abstract

Abstract
This research project focuses on the structural analysis of the Itsekiri noun phrase. Itsekiri is a language spoken in the Niger Delta region of Nigeria and is a member of the Yoruboid branch of the Defoid subfamily of the Benue-Congo group of the Niger-Congo languages. The study aims to investigate the internal structure of the Itsekiri noun phrase, with a particular focus on the elements that make up the noun phrase and their ordering within the phrase. The research employs a descriptive approach to analyze the Itsekiri noun phrase structure. It begins by providing an overview of the basic word order in Itsekiri sentences, which is subject-verb-object (SVO). This basic word order serves as a foundation for understanding how elements are organized within the noun phrase. The study examines the different components that can make up an Itsekiri noun phrase, such as determiners, adjectives, numerals, and noun modifiers. Furthermore, the research investigates the ordering of these elements within the Itsekiri noun phrase. It explores whether there are fixed rules governing the sequence of determiners, adjectives, and other modifiers within the noun phrase or if there is flexibility in the ordering of these elements. The study also considers the role of noun classes in shaping the structure of the noun phrase in Itsekiri. Additionally, the research delves into the morphological characteristics of the elements within the Itsekiri noun phrase. It examines how these elements inflect or agree with the head noun in terms of number, gender, and case. The study also looks at how the agreement patterns vary based on the specific noun class of the head noun. Overall, this research contributes to the understanding of the structure of the Itsekiri language, particularly focusing on the organization of elements within the noun phrase. By elucidating the internal structure of the Itsekiri noun phrase, this study provides valuable insights into the syntax and morphology of the language. The findings of this research can also have implications for language documentation, typology, and theoretical linguistics, shedding light on the structural properties of a lesser-studied African language.

Project Overview

INTRODUCTION

1.1       Background to the Study

Noun phrase also known as nominal phrase (abbreviated as NP) is a type of phrase which has a noun or an indefinite pronoun as head word of its phrase. Noun phrases are very common and are the most recurring phrase type. Noun phrases sometimes function as subjects and objects of verbs, as predicate expressions, and as the complements of prepositions.

This project therefore, is a study that entails the structural analysis of the noun phrase, structure of the Itsekiri language. This study shall present data and thorough analysis would be executed to support findings about the Itsekiri noun phrase.

1.2       The Itsekiri Language

The Itsekiri’s are located in the Niger Delta region of Nigeria in the South of Delta State. Itsekiri’s are majorly located in Warri and Sapele.

The Itsekiri language is a branch of the Yoruboid group of languages. Itsekiri is most closely related to the south eastern Yoruba dialects with which it shares close similarity.

Nevertheless, from a linguistic standpoint, Itsekiri is most closely related to both Yoruba and Igala and incorporates elements of both languages. It is also influenced by Edo (Bini), Portuguese and English language and has taken loan words from neighbouring Ijaw and Urhobo languages. However, its basic structure, grammar and vocabulary is essentially Yoruboid with its closest relatives being the south eastern family of Yoruba dialects (Ijeba Ilaje-Ikale Ondo, etc.).

Below is a diagrammatic representation of Itsekiri’s language family.

  1. To identify and analyse the syntactic structure of the noun phrase of Itsekiri language with the aid of X-bar theory
  2. To serve as a useful material or document for students of linguistics interested in the research and study of the Itsekiri noun phrase
  3. To serve as a guide to the Itsekiri’s who find it difficult to speak the language and are interested to learn
  4. To contribute to Itsekiri literacy
  5. To contribute to knowledge

This study is of essence because it analyses the structure of the Itsekiri noun phrase using x-bar theory. This research hopes to clear any form of confusion or assumption in the minds of individuals naïve of the linguistic syntactic structure of the Itsekiri noun phrase.

It is the belief of this researcher that this study will hep solve language difficulty experienced amongst learners and users of the Itsekiri noun phrase.

1.6       Scope and Limitation

This research is restricted to the syntactic structural analysis of the noun phrase of the Itsekiri language using X-bar theory.

1.7       Methodology

In this research, primary and secondary methods of data collection were both employed. These primary data were gotten from bilingual informants who speak Itsekiri and another language.
