Abstract
Academic libraries play a crucial role in supporting the teaching, learning, and research activities of universities in Nigeria. One of the fundamental functions of academic libraries is to provide access to a wide range of information materials to meet the diverse needs of their users. This study aims to explore the various sources of information materials in Nigerian academic libraries to understand how these institutions acquire and manage their collections. The research methodology employed in this study is a mixed-method approach, combining both qualitative and quantitative data collection methods. A survey questionnaire was distributed to librarians and library staff from selected academic libraries across Nigeria to gather information on the sources of information materials in their libraries. In addition, interviews were conducted with key library personnel to gain deeper insights into the acquisition processes and challenges faced in sourcing information materials. The findings of the study reveal that Nigerian academic libraries utilize a variety of sources to acquire information materials, including purchase from vendors, donations from individuals or organizations, exchange programs with other libraries, and institutional subscriptions to electronic resources. While the majority of libraries rely on purchasing materials from vendors as the primary source of acquisition, donations and exchange programs also play a significant role in supplementing library collections, especially in resource-constrained environments. Challenges identified in the acquisition of information materials include limited funding, inadequate infrastructure, lack of awareness about the importance of donations, and difficulties in negotiating favorable terms with vendors. Despite these challenges, libraries have implemented various strategies to overcome these obstacles, such as engaging in consortia purchasing, seeking external funding opportunities, and establishing partnerships with other institutions. Overall, the study underscores the importance of a diverse acquisition strategy for Nigerian academic libraries to build comprehensive collections that cater to the information needs of their users. By leveraging various sources of information materials and implementing innovative acquisition practices, libraries can enhance their collections and better support the academic community in their pursuit of knowledge and scholarly research.
