Project Abstract

Abstract
The period of military rule in Nigeria, particularly during the regime of General Sani Abacha from 1993 to 1998, marked a significant chapter in the country's political history. This research project seeks to analyze the dynamics of military rule and the subsequent political transition during the Abacha regime, focusing on key events, policies, and implications for Nigeria's democracy. The study will employ a qualitative research approach, utilizing a combination of archival sources, historical documents, and scholarly literature to provide an in-depth analysis of the Abacha era. By examining the political landscape in Nigeria during this period, the research aims to shed light on the strategies employed by the military government to maintain power, suppress dissent, and consolidate control over the country. Through a critical appraisal of the Abacha regime, this research project will explore the impact of military rule on governance, human rights, and socio-economic development in Nigeria. By examining the policies and actions of the government, the study will assess the extent to which the regime's authoritarian practices influenced political stability and public perception during this period. Furthermore, the research will evaluate the challenges faced by civil society organizations, the media, and political opposition groups in navigating the restrictive political environment under military rule. By examining the responses of various stakeholders to the regime's repressive tactics, the study aims to provide insights into the resilience of democratic forces in Nigeria and their efforts to promote political reform and accountability. In addition, the project will examine the process of political transition following the death of General Abacha in 1998, analyzing the factors that led to the eventual return to civilian rule in Nigeria. By assessing the role of domestic and international actors in shaping the transition process, the research will highlight the complexities and opportunities that emerged during this critical period of political change. Overall, this research project seeks to contribute to the existing literature on military rule and political transition in Nigeria by offering a comprehensive analysis of the Abacha regime. By examining the legacy of military rule and its implications for democracy in Nigeria, the study aims to provide valuable insights for policymakers, scholars, and practitioners interested in understanding the challenges and opportunities associated with political change in the country.
