Project Abstract

This project aims to investigate the effectiveness of mindfulness-based interventions in enhancing the mental health and well-being of university students. University life can be incredibly stressful, with students facing a range of academic, social, and personal challenges that can negatively impact their mental health and overall well-being. Mindfulness-based practices, such as meditation, breath work, and present-moment awareness, have shown promising results in alleviating symptoms of mental health issues, including depression, anxiety, and stress, among various populations. However, the specific impact of these interventions on the unique experiences and needs of university students remains an area that requires further exploration. This study will employ a randomized controlled trial (RCT) design to assess the effects of a mindfulness-based intervention on the mental health and well-being of university students. Participants will be randomly assigned to either an intervention group or a waitlist control group. The intervention group will receive an 8-week mindfulness-based program, which will include weekly group sessions and daily home practice. The control group will receive the intervention after the initial 8-week period. The primary outcome measures will be self-reported levels of depression, anxiety, and stress, as well as overall well-being. These will be assessed using standardized and validated questionnaires, such as the Depression Anxiety Stress Scales (DASS-21) and the Warwick-Edinburgh Mental Well-being Scale (WEMWBS). Secondary outcome measures will include participants' levels of mindfulness, self-compassion, and perceived stress, which will be evaluated using additional validated instruments. Data will be collected at three time points baseline, post-intervention (8 weeks), and a 3-month follow-up. This mixed-methods approach will provide a more comprehensive understanding of the impact of mindfulness-based practices on university students' mental health and well-being. The findings of this study have the potential to make a significant contribution to the field of mental health promotion among university students. By demonstrating the effectiveness of mindfulness-based interventions in improving mental health and well-being, the project could inform the development and implementation of targeted mental health support services within university settings. Additionally, the insights gained from the qualitative data may help identify specific needs and preferences of university students, allowing for the tailoring of mindfulness-based programs to better suit this population. Overall, this project aims to fill a critical gap in the literature by rigorously evaluating the impact of mindfulness-based interventions on the mental health and well-being of university students. The results may have important implications for the design and delivery of mental health support services within higher education institutions, ultimately contributing to the enhancement of student well-being and academic success.
