Abstract
The transition to college marks a significant period of change and adjustment for many young adults, often accompanied by increased levels of stress, anxiety, and other mental health challenges. Recognizing the importance of holistic student wellness, this study investigates the impact of physical activity programs on the mental health outcomes of college students. Drawing upon a mixed-methods research design, quantitative surveys and qualitative interviews were conducted with a diverse sample of college students aged 18-25 years. The study explores the relationship between participation in physical activity programs and various indicators of mental well-being, while also examining the mechanisms through which physical activity may influence mental health outcomes. Findings suggest that engaging in regular physical activity is associated with improved mood, reduced stress levels, and enhanced overall mental well-being among college students. Furthermore, qualitative insights shed light on the perceived benefits, barriers, and facilitators to participation in physical activity programs. Theoretical frameworks such as the Health Belief Model and Self-Determination Theory are employed to contextualize the findings and inform recommendations for the development and implementation of evidence-based physical activity interventions on college campuses. This study contributes to the growing body of literature on student wellness in higher education settings and underscores the importance of integrating physical activity promotion into comprehensive mental health initiatives for college students.
Chapter 1
1.1 Background and Rationale
Physical activity has long been recognized as a crucial component of maintaining overall health and well-being. In recent years, the importance of physical activity in relation to mental health has garnered increasing attention, particularly among college students. The transition to college presents a unique set of challenges, including academic pressure, social adjustments, and increased independence, which can significantly impact mental health. Research suggests that engaging in regular physical activity may serve as a protective factor against the development of mental health issues such as stress, anxiety, and depression among college students. Understanding the potential benefits of physical activity programs in this population is essential for promoting holistic student wellness and academic success.
1.2 Research Aim and Objectives
The aim of this study is to investigate the impact of physical activity programs on the mental health outcomes of college students. Specifically, the objectives of this research are to:
1.3 Scope and Significance of the Study
This study will focus on college students aged 18-25 years, as this demographic group represents a critical period of development and vulnerability to mental health challenges. The research will encompass various forms of physical activity programs, including structured exercise classes, recreational sports, outdoor activities, and mindfulness-based practices. By investigating the impact of physical activity programs on mental health outcomes, this study aims to contribute to the growing body of literature on holistic approaches to student wellness in higher education settings. Findings from this research may inform the development of targeted interventions and policies aimed at promoting mental health and academic success among college students.

1.5 Overview of the Research Methodology
The research methodology for this study will employ a mixed-methods approach, combining quantitative surveys with qualitative interviews to provide a comprehensive understanding of the impact of physical activity programs on mental health among college students. Participants will be recruited from diverse academic disciplines and demographic backgrounds to ensure the generalizability of the findings. Data analysis will involve statistical techniques such as regression analysis and thematic coding to identify patterns and associations between variables. Ethical considerations will be prioritized throughout all stages of the research process, including obtaining informed consent and maintaining participant confidentiality.
1.6 Structure of the Thesis
This thesis will be organized into several chapters, each addressing different aspects of the research topic. Chapter 2 will provide a comprehensive review of the relevant literature on physical activity and mental health in college students, including theoretical frameworks and empirical evidence. Chapter 3 will outline the research methodology, including details of participant recruitment, data collection procedures, and analytical techniques. Chapter 4 will present the theoretical framework guiding the study and discuss its implications for understanding the relationship between physical activity and mental health. Subsequent chapters will report on the findings of the study, discuss their implications, and provide recommendations for future research and practice.
