Project Abstract

This project aims to investigate the spatial distribution and accessibility of urban green spaces and their influence on the quality of life of residents within a city. In the face of rapid urbanization and increasing population density, the preservation and strategic planning of green spaces have become crucial in maintaining the well-being and livability of urban communities. Urban green spaces, such as parks, gardens, and natural habitats, play a vital role in enhancing the quality of life for city dwellers. These spaces provide numerous benefits, including improved air quality, reduced urban heat island effects, increased opportunities for physical activity and recreation, and enhanced mental and emotional well-being. However, the uneven distribution and accessibility of these green spaces can lead to disparities in the experiences and perceptions of urban residents, particularly among marginalized communities. This project will employ spatial analysis techniques, including geographic information systems (GIS) and remote sensing, to map and analyze the distribution of urban green spaces within the study area. The team will gather data on the location, size, and characteristics of these green spaces, as well as information on demographic and socioeconomic factors of the surrounding neighborhoods. This comprehensive spatial dataset will enable the researchers to identify patterns, hotspots, and gaps in the provision of green spaces across the city. To understand the impact of urban green spaces on residents' quality of life, the project will also incorporate a survey-based approach. A representative sample of residents will be interviewed to assess their perceptions, experiences, and usage of the available green spaces. Factors such as proximity, accessibility, and satisfaction with the quality and amenities of the green spaces will be evaluated. The survey data will be integrated with the spatial analysis to uncover the relationships between the spatial distribution of green spaces and residents' overall well-being, including aspects such as physical health, mental health, and social cohesion. The findings of this project will contribute to a deeper understanding of the complex interplay between urban green spaces and the quality of life for city residents. The spatial analysis will provide valuable insights into the equitable distribution and accessibility of these vital resources, while the survey data will shed light on the lived experiences and needs of diverse urban communities. The project's outcomes will have important implications for urban planning and policy-making. The insights gained can inform the strategic placement, design, and management of urban green spaces to ensure they are accessible and beneficial to all residents, regardless of their socioeconomic status or geographic location. Furthermore, the project will identify areas of intervention and propose evidence-based strategies to enhance the quality of life in urban environments through the strategic planning and preservation of green spaces. By leveraging the power of spatial analysis and community-based research, this project aims to contribute to the creation of more livable, sustainable, and equitable cities, where urban green spaces are integrated seamlessly into the fabric of the urban landscape and serve as catalysts for improving the overall well-being of residents.
