Abstract
Food security is a critical issue facing emerging economies, particularly in countries like Nigeria where rapid population growth, environmental degradation, and economic challenges have exacerbated the food crisis. This research project aims to provide a critical appraisal of the development and food crisis in Nigeria through the lens of environmental science. By examining the complex interactions between environmental factors, socioeconomic development, and food security, this study seeks to identify key challenges and opportunities for addressing the food crisis in Nigeria. The research will utilize a mixed-methods approach, combining quantitative data analysis with qualitative assessments to provide a comprehensive understanding of the underlying causes of the food crisis in Nigeria. Through the analysis of existing literature, government reports, and statistical data, the study will assess the impact of environmental factors such as climate change, land degradation, and water scarcity on food production and distribution in Nigeria. Additionally, the research will explore the role of socioeconomic factors including poverty, income inequality, and access to resources in exacerbating food insecurity in the country. One of the key objectives of this study is to evaluate existing policies and initiatives aimed at improving food security in Nigeria and assess their effectiveness in addressing the underlying environmental and socioeconomic challenges. By critically analyzing the strengths and weaknesses of current strategies, the research aims to provide recommendations for policymakers, development agencies, and other stakeholders to enhance the resilience of Nigeria's food system and ensure sustainable food security for its growing population. Furthermore, this research project will also investigate the potential impact of emerging technologies and innovations in agriculture, such as precision farming, biotechnology, and renewable energy, on improving food production and resilience to environmental stressors in Nigeria. By exploring the opportunities presented by these advancements, the study seeks to highlight pathways for sustainable development and food security in the country. Overall, this research project will contribute to the existing body of knowledge on the development-food crisis nexus in emerging economies, with a specific focus on Nigeria. By providing a critical appraisal of the environmental and socioeconomic factors influencing food security in the country, the study aims to inform evidence-based policies and interventions that can help address the food crisis and promote sustainable development in Nigeria.
