Project Abstract

Land tenure systems play a crucial role in shaping land use patterns, economic development, and social stability in various regions. This research focuses on the land tenure system in Nigeria, specifically in Ikeduru Local Government Area of Imo State, with a case study of Owerri Municipal Council. The study aims to investigate the dynamics of land tenure arrangements, customary practices, and their implications for land management and governance. The research employs a mixed-methods approach, combining quantitative surveys and qualitative interviews with key stakeholders such as landowners, community leaders, government officials, and land surveyors. The data collected will be analyzed using statistical tools and thematic analysis to provide a comprehensive understanding of the land tenure system in the study area. The findings of this research are expected to shed light on the historical evolution of land tenure systems in Nigeria, the role of traditional authorities in land administration, and the challenges facing the current land governance framework. By examining the practices and perceptions of various stakeholders, the study will identify areas of conflict and consensus in land tenure arrangements and propose recommendations for improving land tenure security, enhancing land use planning, and strengthening land governance institutions. The research also aims to contribute to the existing literature on land tenure systems in Nigeria and provide insights for policymakers, community leaders, and development practitioners on how to address land tenure issues in a way that promotes sustainable land management, social equity, and economic development. The study will highlight the importance of incorporating customary land practices into formal land governance frameworks and the need for participatory approaches to land administration that respect the rights and interests of all stakeholders. Overall, this research seeks to deepen our understanding of the complexities of land tenure systems in Nigeria and their implications for land management and governance. By examining the case of Ikeduru L.G.A in Imo State, with a focus on Owerri Municipal Council, the study aims to generate knowledge that can inform policy interventions and community-driven initiatives to improve land tenure security and promote sustainable land use practices in the region.
