Abstract
The portrayal of gender in literature has been a subject of interest and debate for many years, with scholars and critics examining how various authors represent gender identities and roles. This research project focuses on exploring the representation of gender in contemporary African literature, specifically looking at how African authors depict and challenge traditional gender norms and stereotypes. The study aims to provide a comprehensive analysis of the diverse ways in which gender is portrayed in African literary works, considering the social, cultural, and historical contexts in which these texts are situated. Chapter 1 of the project provides an introduction to the research topic, presenting the background of the study and outlining the problem statement, objectives, limitations, scope, significance, structure of the research, and definition of key terms. Chapter 2 consists of a detailed literature review that examines existing scholarship on gender representation in African literature, highlighting key themes, trends, and theoretical frameworks in the field. This chapter also identifies gaps in the literature and sets the stage for the research methodology. Chapter 3 focuses on the research methodology, outlining the research design, data collection methods, sampling strategy, data analysis techniques, and ethical considerations. The chapter also discusses the theoretical framework that guides the analysis of gender representation in contemporary African literature. Through a multi-faceted approach, the study aims to provide a nuanced understanding of how gender is depicted in African literary texts and the implications of these representations. Chapter 4 presents the findings of the research, offering a detailed analysis of the gender representation in selected African literary works. The chapter examines how authors challenge traditional gender roles, subvert stereotypes, and provide alternative perspectives on gender identity and relationships.
