Language attitudes play a crucial role in shaping linguistic behaviors and interactions among individuals. This study explores the language attitudes among teenagers in Uyo towards African languages and its effects. The research focuses on understanding how teenagers perceive African languages in the context of their linguistic repertoire and identity formation. A case study approach is adopted to delve into the specific attitudes of teenagers in Uyo towards African languages. The research methodology includes surveys, interviews, and observations to gather comprehensive data on language attitudes and behaviors. By examining the attitudes of teenagers towards African languages, the study aims to uncover the underlying factors that influence language preferences and choices among this demographic group. The findings of this research indicate a complex interplay of factors that shape teenagers' attitudes towards African languages. Social perceptions, cultural influences, educational background, and personal experiences all contribute to the formation of language attitudes among teenagers in Uyo. The study reveals a diverse range of attitudes towards African languages, ranging from pride and appreciation to indifference and negative stereotypes. Furthermore, the research highlights the impact of language attitudes on teenagers' linguistic behaviors and language use. Positive attitudes towards African languages are associated with increased motivation to learn and use these languages, leading to greater language proficiency and cultural awareness. Conversely, negative attitudes can result in language avoidance, loss of proficiency, and a weakened sense of cultural identity. The study also explores the implications of language attitudes on language policy and planning in Uyo. By understanding the attitudes of teenagers towards African languages, policymakers and educators can develop strategies to promote the preservation and revitalization of these languages in the community.
