Abstract
Entrepreneurs play a vital role in driving economic growth by creating jobs, fostering innovation, and enhancing competition in the marketplace. Business education programs aim to equip graduates with the necessary knowledge and skills to succeed in various professional roles, including entrepreneurship. This research project focuses on identifying the management competences that are crucial for business education graduates aspiring to operate small businesses successfully. The study employs a mixed-methods approach, combining qualitative and quantitative data collection methods to provide a comprehensive understanding of the topic. In the qualitative phase, semi-structured interviews are conducted with experienced entrepreneurs to gather insights into the key management competences they believe are essential for running small businesses. These interviews reveal valuable information about the practical challenges faced by entrepreneurs and the competences that have proven most valuable in overcoming these challenges. In the quantitative phase, a survey is administered to business education graduates who have ventured into entrepreneurship. The survey aims to assess the graduates' perceived level of competence in various management areas and identify any gaps in their skill sets. By analyzing the survey data, the researchers can gain a broader perspective on the management competences possessed by business education graduates and the areas where additional training or development may be needed. The findings of this research contribute to the existing literature on entrepreneurship education and management competences. By identifying the specific competences required for small business operations, educators can tailor business programs to better meet the needs of aspiring entrepreneurs. Additionally, policymakers can use this information to design targeted initiatives that support entrepreneurship development and create a more conducive environment for small business growth. Overall, this research project sheds light on the management competences that business education graduates need to succeed as entrepreneurs in the small business sector. By understanding and addressing these competences, stakeholders in the education and business sectors can work together to foster a new generation of skilled and successful entrepreneurs who drive innovation, create jobs, and contribute to economic prosperity.

Project Overview

This study was descriptive survey to establish the entrepreneur management competencies required of business education graduates for small business operations in Awka south local government Area. Four research question were formulated to guide the study the population comprised of 111 registered small scale business owners in Awka south Local Government Area. 45 respondents were selected because of the scattered location using purposive sampling technique. Mean was used to analyze the data collected with the aid of structured questionnaire developed from the review of related literature. Finding of this study showed that the following: Planning competencies, controlling competencies, Technical competencies, Public relation competencies are needed by business education graduates for successful small scale business. It was recommended among others that entrepreneurship should create opportunities for students to participate in social entrepreneurship contests. Government should give loan to business education graduates to start their own business after graduation.
