Project Abstract

Chronic periodontitis is a prevalent oral health condition characterized by the progressive destruction of the supporting structures of the teeth, including the gingiva, periodontal ligament, and alveolar bone. This debilitating disease can lead to tooth loss and has been associated with various systemic health complications, such as cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and adverse pregnancy outcomes. Consequently, the effective management of chronic periodontitis is a critical concern in the field of dentistry. Conventional periodontal therapy, which involves scaling and root planing (SRP), has been the mainstay of treatment for chronic periodontitis. However, this approach has inherent limitations, as it relies solely on mechanical debridement and may not adequately address the underlying microbiological and inflammatory components of the disease. In recent years, the use of laser-assisted periodontal therapy (LAPT) has emerged as a promising alternative or adjunctive treatment modality, offering the potential to enhance the clinical outcomes of periodontal therapy. The primary objective of this project is to comprehensively evaluate the efficacy of LAPT in the management of chronic periodontitis, with a focus on clinical, microbiological, and patient-reported outcomes. The study will employ a randomized, controlled clinical trial design, with participants randomly assigned to receive either LAPT or conventional SRP. The clinical outcomes will be assessed through measures such as probing depth, clinical attachment level, and bleeding on probing. The microbiological component will involve the analysis of subgingival plaque samples to quantify the changes in the composition of the periodontal microbiome. Additionally, patient-reported outcomes, including pain, sensitivity, and overall satisfaction, will be evaluated using validated questionnaires. The potential benefits of this project are manifold. By rigorously evaluating the efficacy of LAPT, the study aims to provide evidence-based guidance for clinicians in selecting the most appropriate treatment approach for patients with chronic periodontitis. If LAPT is found to be superior to conventional SRP, it could lead to the widespread adoption of this innovative therapy, improving patient outcomes and quality of life. Furthermore, the insights gained from the microbiological analysis may enhance our understanding of the complex interplay between the periodontal microbiome and the host response, potentially paving the way for the development of more targeted and personalized treatment strategies.
