Abstract
This research project aimed to investigate the phytochemical and nutritional composition of the aqueous leaf extract of Justicia carnea and its potential effects on selected biochemical parameters in anaemic rats. Justicia carnea, a commonly found plant in tropical regions, is known for its traditional medicinal uses. The study began by preparing the aqueous leaf extract of Justicia carnea and analyzing its phytochemical constituents through various standard methods. The nutritional composition of the extract was also determined to understand its potential nutritional benefits. In the experimental phase of the study, anaemia was induced in rats through a controlled method, and the anaemic rats were then treated with the aqueous leaf extract of Justicia carnea over a specified period. The effects of the extract on biochemical parameters such as hemoglobin levels, red blood cell count, hematocrit levels, and iron profile were evaluated. Additionally, the antioxidant activity of the extract was assessed to understand its potential role in combating oxidative stress associated with anaemia. The results of the study revealed the presence of various phytochemicals in the aqueous leaf extract of Justicia carnea, including alkaloids, flavonoids, tannins, saponins, and phenols. These phytochemicals contribute to the potential therapeutic properties of the extract. The nutritional analysis indicated the presence of essential nutrients that could contribute to the overall health benefits of consuming the extract. Furthermore, the administration of the aqueous leaf extract of Justicia carnea to anaemic rats showed promising results in improving their hemoglobin levels, red blood cell count, and hematocrit levels. The extract also demonstrated a positive impact on the iron profile of the anaemic rats, indicating its potential role in enhancing iron absorption or utilization. Moreover, the antioxidant activity of the extract suggests its ability to combat oxidative stress, which is often a concern in anaemia. The findings of this study highlight the potential of the aqueous leaf extract of Justicia carnea as a natural remedy for managing anaemia and improving biochemical parameters associated with the condition. Further research is warranted to elucidate the specific mechanisms of action and potential therapeutic applications of this plant extract in the context of anaemia treatment and management.
