Project Abstract

Abstract
Senna alata, commonly known as candle bush or emperor's candlesticks, is a plant with various traditional medicinal uses. This study aimed to screen Senna alata leaves for their biochemical composition and hypoglycemic activity. The leaves were collected, dried, and processed to obtain the crude extract. The biochemical analysis included determining the total phenolic content, total flavonoid content, and antioxidant activity. The hypoglycemic activity was evaluated using in vitro assays with glucose uptake in L6 myotubes and in vivo assays with oral glucose tolerance tests in rats. The results showed that the Senna alata leaf extract had a significant amount of phenolic compounds and flavonoids, indicating its potential antioxidant properties. The extract also demonstrated moderate antioxidant activity, which could be attributed to these bioactive compounds. In the hypoglycemic activity assays, the extract exhibited a dose-dependent increase in glucose uptake in L6 myotubes, suggesting its potential in enhancing glucose utilization. Furthermore, the oral glucose tolerance tests in rats revealed a significant reduction in blood glucose levels after administration of the extract, indicating its ability to lower blood sugar levels. These findings support the traditional use of Senna alata leaves in managing diabetes and suggest its potential as a natural hypoglycemic agent. Further studies are warranted to elucidate the underlying mechanisms of action and to isolate the active compounds responsible for the observed effects. In conclusion, the screening of Senna alata leaves for biochemical composition and hypoglycemic activity revealed promising results, highlighting its potential as a natural remedy for diabetes. The study provides a scientific basis for the traditional use of this plant and opens avenues for future research on developing novel therapies for diabetes using natural sources.
