Project Abstract

Abstract
The presence of Escherichia coli (E. coli) in water bodies is a common indicator of fecal contamination and potential health risks associated with waterborne diseases. This study aimed to isolate and identify E. coli strains as indicators of fecal pollution in streams on the Obafemi Awolowo University (O.A.U) campus in Ile-Ife, Osun State. Water samples were collected from different stream locations on the campus and analyzed for the presence of E. coli using standard microbiological techniques. The isolated E. coli strains were further characterized using biochemical tests and molecular techniques such as polymerase chain reaction (PCR) targeting specific E. coli genes. The results revealed the presence of E. coli in all the stream samples analyzed, indicating fecal contamination in the streams on the O.A.U campus. The biochemical tests confirmed the identity of the isolated strains as E. coli based on their characteristic metabolic properties. Furthermore, PCR analysis targeting specific E. coli genes such as uidA and gadA provided additional confirmation of the presence of E. coli in the samples. The identification of E. coli as an indicator of fecal pollution in the streams highlights the potential health risks associated with waterborne diseases for individuals coming into contact with contaminated water sources on the O.A.U campus. The findings underscore the importance of regular monitoring and assessment of water quality in these streams to mitigate health risks and protect the campus community from waterborne diseases. Overall, this study contributes to the understanding of fecal pollution in streams on the O.A.U campus and emphasizes the need for effective water management strategies to ensure the safety of water sources on the campus. Future research could focus on exploring the sources of fecal contamination in these streams and implementing measures to prevent further pollution, thereby safeguarding the health and well-being of the university community.
