Project Abstract

Abstract
Value Added Tax (VAT) is a consumption tax levied on the value added to a product at each stage of the supply chain. It is an indirect tax that is ultimately borne by the final consumer. The implementation of VAT has become widespread globally as a reliable source of revenue for governments. This study examines the effect of Value Added Tax (VAT) on the Nigerian economy. Nigeria, like many developing countries, relies on VAT as a significant source of revenue. The study employs a case study approach to analyze the impact of VAT on key economic indicators in Nigeria. The research focuses on understanding the implications of VAT on economic growth, inflation, consumer behavior, government revenue, and overall economic performance. By examining the Nigerian economy, the study aims to provide insights into the effectiveness of VAT as a fiscal policy tool in a developing country context. The findings from this research can contribute to the existing literature on VAT and inform policymakers on the optimal design and implementation of VAT in Nigeria. Through a comprehensive analysis of existing literature, economic data, and policy documents, the study evaluates the role of VAT in the Nigerian economy. The research considers both the advantages and challenges associated with VAT implementation. By assessing the impact of VAT on different economic sectors and income groups, the study aims to provide a nuanced understanding of the tax's effects on various stakeholders. The methodology involves quantitative analysis of economic data, including VAT revenue trends, GDP growth rates, inflation rates, and consumer spending patterns. Additionally, qualitative insights from experts in tax policy and economics are incorporated to provide a holistic perspective on the topic. The study also considers international best practices in VAT administration and compliance to draw lessons for Nigeria. The results of the study are expected to offer valuable recommendations for policymakers, tax authorities, and businesses operating in Nigeria. By identifying the strengths and weaknesses of the current VAT system, the research aims to suggest potential reforms to enhance the tax's contribution to economic development and fiscal sustainability. Overall, this research contributes to the ongoing discourse on the role of VAT in shaping the economic landscape of Nigeria and similar developing economies.
